Murderer of Women --- The incidence of breast cancer has been increasing dramatically

According to the statistics released by the Department of Health, up until 1999, the rate of breast cancer among every 100,000 women has dramatically increased from 5.9 cases in 1979 to 40.8 cases; breast cancer is second only to cervical cancer, the second largest women cancer. This is why prevention is progressively important. Breast cancer not only threatens women’s lives, but also brings serious impacts to the society and the family structure; breast cancer patients and their family members suffer from mental torture and helpless fear even more during the long process of treatment.

“Kaihuai” Introduction
Taichung Kaihuai Association or formerly known as “Kaihuai Club”, is a service organization helped set up by the health care and social workers at Taichung Veterans General Hospital in 1994, approved by Taichung city government of its registration for Kaihuai Association in 1998, and registered to the Taichung District Court as a legal entity in 2003. Over 800 members of Kaihuai are all breast cancer survivors.

“Kaihuai” Goal
Kaihuai’s goal is to serve breast cancer patients and help them adjust to different psychological, emotional, family, and social environments with the combination of health care social workers’ professional knowledge and patients’ previous experiences and strengths. In addition, Kaihuai provides breast cancer detection and service of therapy sessions to the public community. Kaihuai is not only limited in cities and counties in central Taiwan, but also it cooperates with breast cancer support groups in other cities and counties, providing assistance and services for all women in need.
